NEMA 250 Type 3R Enclosures

NEMA 250 is the NEMA standard titled 'Enclosures for Electrical Equipment (1000 Volts Maximum).' It classifies enclosures by their level of protection against environmental hazards — including dust, water, ice, and corrosion — ensuring electrical equipment is appropriately rated for its intended installation environment, whether indoor or outdoor.

NEMA 3R designates an enclosure rated for outdoor use that protects against falling rain, sleet, and the formation of ice on the enclosure. It does not require protection against windblown dust or debris. NEMA 3R is one of the most common ratings for outdoor electrical distribution equipment, including switchboards, switchgear, and service entrance sections.

A 3R outdoor rating means the enclosure meets NEMA Type 3R specifications: it resists rain, sleet, and ice accumulation on the exterior.
