True 480V single-phase is uncommon in the U.S. but does exist in certain industrial applications derived from a center-tapped delta transformer, producing 480V across two legs. Most 480V single-phase loads are served from two legs of a 480V three-phase system. DEI Power's 480V product line is primarily designed for three-phase commercial and industrial distribution applications.

In a balanced 480V three-phase wye (480Y/277V) system, each phase leg should measure approximately 277V to neutral and 480V phase-to-phase. In a 480V delta system, each leg measures 480V to the other phases with no neutral reference. Consistent readings across all three legs confirm a balanced system. Significant deviations may indicate a wiring issue or load imbalance.

A 480V three-phase delta system does not require a neutral conductor, as loads connect phase-to-phase. However, a 480Y/277V wye system includes a neutral, which is required to serve 277V single-phase loads such as lighting circuits. Switchboards are typically front-accessible, open-construction panels used for branch circuit distribution in commercial and industrial facilities.
