277V is derived from a 480V 3-phase wye system by measuring the voltage between any single phase leg and the neutral (ground) conductor. In a wye configuration, the line-to-neutral voltage equals the line-to-line voltage divided by the square root of 3 (√3 ≈ 1.732). So 480V ÷ 1.732 ≈ 277V. This is why 480Y/277V panels can supply both voltages from a single system.
