A 480V three-phase system uses either 3 or 4 wires depending on configuration. A 480V delta system uses 3 wires (three hot conductors). A 480Y/277V wye system uses 4 wires — three hot conductors and a neutral. A fifth grounding conductor is typically added for safety per NEC requirements, making most practical installations 4–5 wire systems.

The standard nominal voltage for three-phase commercial and industrial service in the United States is 480V, not 408V. The 480Y/277V configuration is the most common three-phase wye arrangement. 408V is not a recognized standard voltage. Voltage readings near that value may indicate measurement error, significant voltage drop, or a non-standard configuration.
